Summer Camp Lead Teacher

Job Description - Summer 2019

The Gathering Place is a proposed new public charter school in San Antonio focused on arts and social justice through student-driven projects. We are prototyping key aspects of our school model through two free summer camps, each lasting one week. We are hiring for two summer camp lead teachers: one for our first camp, Imagination Theater, and one for our second camp, Creating Social Change through Advocacy.

Camp 1: Imagination Theater (25 campers, ages 6-8 years old)

Overview
The first summer camp will be for 25 children ages 6 - 8. Over the course of the week-long camp, children will design a play. They will script the play, make costumes, create the set and props, manage sound, and perform. The lead teacher will have a teaching assistant and will work with ~25 campers.

Who we’re looking for:
We are looking to hire someone with prior experience teaching early elementary school students and who has a basic understanding of theater. You do not have to have a teaching certification nor do you have to be actively teaching in a school.

Job Responsibilities:
The lead teacher will be responsible for leading the summer camp, overseeing programming and the safety of all children. The date of the camp will be set to fit the lead teacher’s summer schedule. The lead teacher will also be responsible for collaboratively planning the summer camp programming and activities based on their unique experience and interests. The week of the camp will be 40 hours of work and there will an expectation of an additional 10 hours of planning during the months leading up to the summer camp.

Camp 2: Creating Social Change through Advocacy (25 CAMPERS, AGES 9-12 YEARS OLD)

Overview
The second summer camp will be for 25 children ages 9 - 12. The camp’s focus will be on a human-centered approach to identifying societal inequities, developing solutions to raise awareness and create change through action, and implementing those solutions using techniques rooted in advocacy and social justice. The lead teacher will have a teaching assistant and will work with ~25 campers.
